  • Design direction of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Celebration Cauldron and Lantern

    19 March 2020

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch Relay Celebration Cauldron and Lantern are unveiled.

The Celebration Cauldron is used for ceremonial occasions, including the Arrival Ceremony, the Special Display of the "Flame of Recovery", the Departure Celebrations and the celebrations at the end of each day. In addition, part of the material used to create the Cauldron is recycled aluminium which was originally used in the construction of temporary housing units in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The design is based on the same cherry blossom motif as that of the torch.

The lantern is an item that is used to transport the flame lit in Greece to the host country, and carried by vehicle between municipalities where the torch relay is held. Tokujin Yoshioka redesigned the historical lantern specially for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Torch Relay.

  • HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE / AOYAMA

    19 July 2019

We are pleased to announce that Tokujin Yoshioka designed the HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE's first flagship store newly opened in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.

You can watch the process of the pleats being created in the workshop where the pleating machine sits. In this space that depicts the contrast between the texture steadily being produced and the futuristic machine, we find the reflection of making things of ISSEY MIYAKE, which is a fusion of experimental technology and handcraft.

  • Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch

    21 March 2019

I designed the Olympic Torch in the wishes for peace and healing of hearts of those affected by the natural disasters.

In 2015, I visited Fukushima prefecture and did a drawing workshop with children from the disaster affected area as an assistance for reconstruction. The cherry blossoms they drew were all vibrant, as if they're symbolising the spirit of the people taking steps toward reconstruction, and projecting hopes for the future. That experience inspired me to design this torch.

The shape of the torch has a cherry blossom motif which is the popular and symbolic flower of Japan.

Part of the material from which the torch is made is recycled aluminium originally used in the construction of prefabricated housing units in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The temporary units used to house those affected by the disaster have been transformed into the Olympic torch, and communicate the steps taken toward reconstruction of the disaster affected areas.

The torch has been created in a traditional "sakura emblem" form using the aluminium extrusion manufacturing technology and precise cutting technique. The torch is designed to reduce the weight thoroughly, and is completely seamless.

What I designed is not merely the shape of the torch body, but most importantly, the form of the flame. Five separate flames emerge from flower petals and come together as one at the center of the torch, and it becomes a flame of Sakura as a symbol of peace.

As if sakura trees bloom across Japan, the sacred flame traverse across Japan, and I hope this narrative will engage people more and lights our way.

  • LOUIS VUITTON Blossom Vase

    07 March 2019

Tokujin Yoshioka presents 'Blossom Vase' in collaboration with Louis Vuitton Objet Nomades at Salone del Mobile 2019.

'Blossom Vase' is a collection of two vases inspired from Louis Vuitton's monogram pattern that symbolize the maison's history.

The light refracted through the twisted glass gives a sense of wonder. The design plays upon more than just a glass, and appears as a sculptural piece of light.
